Locked out in Melbourne: what to do in the first ten minutes

The first ten minutes decide whether this is a cheap callout or an expensive door repair. Here is the order we tell people to work through on the phone.

Most lockouts we attend across Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond are not complicated jobs. They become expensive when someone spends twenty minutes attacking their own door with a screwdriver before they ring us. This is the order we walk people through on the phone.

1. Check every other opening before you touch the front door

Rear doors, laundry doors, sliding stackers onto a deck, the internal garage door and ground-floor windows all get left unlocked far more often than front doors. In terrace housing across Fitzroy and Abbotsford, the rear laneway gate is the single most common way people get themselves back in.

Do not climb anything. We have attended more injuries from a wobbly bin under a bathroom window than from any lock failure, and a broken window costs more than the callout you were trying to avoid.

2. Work out whether it's a lockout or a lock failure

If your key is in your hand and it simply will not turn, that is a lock failure, not a lockout — and the fix is different. Tell the locksmith which one it is, because a seized mortice lock needs a repair kit and a lockout needs entry tools.

If the key turns freely and nothing happens, the cam or the spindle has usually let go inside the door. If the key won't enter at all, the cylinder may have been vandalised or superglued, which we see occasionally around late-night retail strips.

3. Ring a locksmith who will describe the job before quoting

A locksmith who quotes a suspiciously low flat fee sight-unseen is quoting the callout, not the job. Ask three things: what is the total likely to be, will you attempt non-destructive entry first, and what happens to the price if you have to drill.

You should be able to describe the door — timber or aluminium, one lock or two, deadlock or latch, security screen or not — and get a realistic range back on the phone. That is the conversation that stops surprise invoices.

4. Have your proof of residence ready

Every legitimate Victorian locksmith will ask for evidence that you are entitled to enter. Photo ID with the address, a tenancy agreement, a rates notice or a utility bill all work. If your ID is inside the property, a real-estate agent or landlord confirming by phone is usually enough.

This is not bureaucracy for its own sake — it is exactly the check that protects you from someone else talking their way into your home next month.

5. Fix the cause, not just the symptom

A door that latched behind you once will do it again. Before the locksmith leaves, ask whether the snib is worn, whether the door has dropped on its hinges, and whether the key is showing wear on the shoulder. Ten minutes of adjustment at the time of the callout is much cheaper than a second lockout.

The short version

  • 01Check rear and side entries before you touch the front door — never climb.
  • 02Tell the locksmith whether the key turns; it changes which tools come out of the van.
  • 03Get a range on the phone and ask specifically about drilling.
  • 04Have proof of residence ready before the van arrives.
  • 05Ask for the underlying cause to be fixed on the same visit.

FAQ

Questions people ask us about this

How long does a locksmith take to reach an inner-north lockout?
From our Collingwood base, most inner-north jobs are 20 to 40 minutes door to door depending on the hour and the traffic. Suburbs like Fitzroy, Abbotsford and Clifton Hill are typically at the short end of that range.
Will a locksmith always have to drill my lock?
No. The large majority of residential lockouts are opened non-destructively with picks, bypass tools or decoding. Drilling is reserved for high-security or damaged cylinders and should always be quoted before it starts.
Is it cheaper to wait until morning?
Sometimes. If you have somewhere safe to stay and the property is secure, a daytime booking avoids the after-hours component. If the property is open, unsecured or a child or pet is inside, do not wait.
